2015 Jaguar XF starts at £32,300 and offers over 70mpg

Jaguar's second-generation XF saloon is on sale now, with the cheapest model at £32,300 and claiming 71.7mpg

After the dramatic high-wire reveal of the new Jaguar XF last week, the BMW 5 Series challenger has come back down to earth with the unveiling of full pricing and specification details. The 2015 XF is available to order now with first deliveries expected in the autumn, and the range kicks of at £32,300.

The starting price gets you in the most economical model in the range: the 2.0-litre 'Ingenium' diesel in Prestige spec with a six-speed manual box. This engine delivers 161bhp and 380Nm of torque, yet is capable of a class-leading 71.7mpg and 104g/km of CO2.

Its figures compare well with a similarly priced BMW 520d, which has 181bhp and 380Nm of torque but only manages 65.7mpg and 114g/km. An Audi A6 Ultra is more powerful still, with 187bhp and 400Nm of torque, but still only achieves 65.7mpg and 113g/km.

The Jaguar's impressive stats are partly due to the new engine and low drag coefficient of 0.26, but also a consequence of significant weight loss, thanks to the aluminium-intensive architecture. The new XF is 190kg lighter than the old model, and Jaguar claims the diesel is at least 80kg lighter than the competition.

The eight-speed automatic transmission costs £1,750 and adds 5g/km of CO2 to the diesel models, while opting for the more powerful 178bhp diesel (£500 more than the lower-powered unit) adds the same again. The 295bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel in sporty 'S' trim pushes the prices up to £49,950, while CO2 rises to 144g/km.

The sole petrol engine is a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 borrowed from the F-Type and new XE compact executive, and is again £49,950. That pushes CO2 right up to 198g/km, but in the smaller XE it's capable of 0-62mph in around five seconds.

To simplify the range, three trim levels are offered on the smaller diesel engines. Prestige is the entry-level model, and is followed by R-Sport for an additional £1,900. The former emphasises comfort, while the latter adds sportier styling tweaks and firmer suspension. Portfolio models are the most generously equipped, reflected in a price kicking off at £36,400.

The XF range also comes with much more advanced tech than before, including an all-new 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Dubbed InControl Touch Pro, it claims to offer "seamless" smartphone connection, door-to-door navigation and a 17-speaker, 825-watt sound system.

Full-LED headlights, a laser head-up display, autonomous safety systems and a new 12.3-inch TFT instrument display are among some of the other tech highlights. Full equipment lists and performance data willl be revealed closer to the delivery dates.
