Overall Average Rating: 89.21%
Position in the Top 100 cars: 9th

A regular Auto Express group test winner, Land Rover’s Freelander is a superb all-rounder. While it hasn’t quite matched the dizzy heights of its Discovery big brother, the compact SUV is well loved in all but one of your judging categories.

A lowly 71st place for running costs shows that owners are losing patience with big bills. Enviable ratings for both comfort and ride provide ample compensation, and help the Land Rover into the top 10 overall – a substantial leap of 10 places up the chart compared with Driver Power 2008.

Your Quotes

“Superb ride and comfort, a go-anywhere car with loads of room, visibility and presence. Has excellent oomph for overtaking yet is frugal, too. Owning it is a delight.”

Michael Irwin, Biggar, South Lanarkshire

Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 7th)

What a leap up the chart! You say the Discovery and Freelander are so good to own, they wipe out the bad memory of older models. Sales are struggling, yet Land Rover still has the support of customers.

The car has been excellent until the engine gave way tthree weeks ago, as a pre-registered vehicle the warranyty expired in September 09, I have been offered a 50% contribution for a new engine from Land Rover, I feel this is a low figure as the vehicle has less than 60,000 miles om the clock. I expect to be back on the road before the end of the month and am trying to obtain a full warranty on the new engine. This is the only let down and only the fifth time I have had to call on the AA in fify years of membership.

Having driven a traditional saloon car for a number of years I have been very surprised at how well the Land Rover drives and handles and impressed by its versatility, as I drive a lot of miles I have also been impressed by its comfort and economy, given all the bad press about 4x4 vehicles I have to say that perhaps they should reconsider I certainly have!

This Freelander 2 is my first SUV and it has been a great choice. I have previously had Mercedes estates and this car is different but as rewarding to own and drive. Mine is the auto model and it is thirsty - the manual is much better on fuel. Servicing is a crazy price, but only comes-up at 15k intervals so averages out OK.

A great improvement on the freelander 1, a little thirsty for a diesel mini SUV
Fantastic 4wd transmission system, doing all the thinking about differential and handling settings, needing only to be warnedof terrain conditions

An excellent car which has more than exceeded my expectations. I would like it to be slightly more powerful and economical, but it still performs well and I am happy with its performance
