Mercedes wants to Captur the X factor with a new X-Class based on Renault's baby SUV

A new Mercedes X-Class is on the cards and our exclusive picture shows how it could look.

The forthcoming Mercedes GLK will rival the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, while taking the total number of Mercedes SUVs offered in the UK to five. The brand won't stop there though and a sub-GLA crossover, based on the Renault Captur and said to be called X-Class, is on Mercedes’ wish list.

“There is the question of what happens below [the GLA],” Mercedes head of research and development, Thomas Weber, told us. “We are watching it closely, but there are other gaps in the range that are more interesting.”

Our exclusive image shows the X-Class following the latest Mercedes design language with a large upright grille and swooping creases in the side panels along with rugged underbody protection.

A sportier version of the ML, likely to be called MLC, will debut in 2015, so don’t expect the X-Class to arrive until 2016 at the earliest.
