Swedish firm Saab is heading off the beaten track. These are the first pictures of the exciting new 9-4X compact SUV. The top secret new model was due to be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show, but a number of European websites have leaked images early.
As you can see, the rugged newcomer takes its inspiration from the rakish Aero X concept car. The front features a prominent grille and wraparound headlights, while the sweeping window line apes that of classic 900 hatchback. The rear features full width tail-lights and distinctive rectangular twin exhausts.
Underneath the stylish exterior will be a toughened version of the firm’s advanced XWD four-wheel drive system. Sitting on a raised ride height and toughened suspension will mean light off-roading will be a possibility.
Company bosses intend the 9-4X to be as environmentally friendly as possible. As a result, ethanol burning Biopower engines will be available across the range. Range-topping versions will feature a 240bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged E85 unit, linked to either a six-speed manual or auto gearbox.
The first examples should hit UK roads in 2009. Shortly afterwards sister firm Cadillac will reveal its own version badged the BRX.
