Clever Kenwood cuts your clutter

18th October 2008

It’s probably easier to list what this double-dash-slot Kenwood doesn’t do, so comprehensive is the list of its functions!

Essentially it combines all your gadgets into a unit that fits the now common double-DIN slot, eliminating clutter. And for a bit of kit that does
so much, it is easy to use – although some functions had us reaching for the instructions.

The sat-nav is by Garmin and the brilliant hands-free by Parrot (pictured). The DNX5220BT can also play DVDs and CDs plus handle music from memory sticks. Paired with an iPod it works seamlessly, even showing album artwork, but unfortunately an extra £41 lead is required to control audio and video. You need to buy an additional lead to use other MP3 players, too. This is not what we’d expect for £900, even if it does include fitting at Halfords. However, that is our only gripe about this head unit which does so much, so very well – and certainly sounds better than the one it replaced in our car.

Problems? You need to buy additional leads for full iPod control, steep price.
So why buy? It’s a one-box solution to just about all of your in-car gadget needs.
