Lewis Hamilton wasn’t the only driver celebrating last weekend. Citroen’s top gun Sebastien Loeb captured an unprecedented fifth World Rally Championship after surviving a last-minute spin to finish third in Japan behind the two Fords of Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala. “The rally was really difficult,” said the Frenchman, who adopted a cautious approach in his efforts to clinch the crown before the season finale in Wales later this month.
“It was hard to get into a rhythm as the only thing I had on my mind was not to make a mistake. I now feel more relaxed for Wales, an event I really want to win.” Meanwhile, there is still everything to fight for in the manufacturers’ championship, where Citroen has an 11-point lead over Ford.
