MINI at L.A.

The MINI E’s dramatic entrance on the LA show stands certainly didn’t come as a shock. But that didn’t stop Auto Express from getting a ringside seat to see the all-electric plug-in supermini unveiled in the metal for the first time.

And the German maker certainly picked the perfect place to launch it. With the US responsible for a 30 per cent boost in the brand’s sales, it’s now the firm’s biggest market. California’s strict air pollution regulations also mean it has ambitious plans for a zero-emissions State, making this new car certain to be a big hit.

The manufacturer is already massively over-subscribed for its 12-month trial of 500 MINI Es. Brand boss Dr Wolfgang Armbrecht says it’s received a staggering 10,000 applications so far. Those lucky enough to secure a year-long contract will still have to pay 0 a month for the privilege. But a garage wall box which reduces charge time to just two hours will be fitted for free.

He added: “The trial will help us to identify any problems, and work out what infrastructure is needed to launch this car. We’d like to see charging points not just at home, but also outside restaurants, shopping malls and even offices.”
