MINI E set to spawn BMW electric family

It’s the small car with some big plans!

MINI E

29th November 2008

Auto Express has learned that the new all-electric MINI E – is destined to play a huge role in owner BMW’s future zero-emissions range.

The car forms the basis for a new lithium-ion battery-powered BMW, due in 2010. Technical feedback will be collected from the 450 US customers who will lease the MINI E. This will help bosses plan the perfect electric family model, which will be more practical.

A BMW spokesperson told us: “As the rear seats and cargo carrying space are lost [because of the battery pack], the MINI is not a candidate for mass production.” However, its drivetrain is likely to appear in the 5 or 7-Series, as the lithium-ion batteries’ weight would be less noticeable and comfort more easily maintained. The system would then be applied to the 3-Series and smaller SUVs such as the X1 and X3.
