F1 safety car pit ban is lifted

24th February 2009

There will be new safety car regulations this year, too. Under current rules, the pitlane is closed once the silver Mercedes SL is on the track, and drivers entering for refuelling during this period are hit with a penalty.

However, for the new season, the garages will remain open. But to avoid a mad, flat-out dash to the pumps while the yellow flags are waving, drivers will have to engage a ‘safety car’ setting. This will restrict their racer’s speed until the on-track danger is cleared.
