Leaf a zero hero

Purpose-built electric Nissan to give zero emissions from a Golf-sized hatchback promising 100-mile range

07th August 2009

Nissan is turning over a new Leaf! This specifically built electric car is claimed to be the world’s first affordable, zero-emission passenger vehicle.

The medium-sized hatch has room for five adults, and its lithium-ion battery pack, plus regenerative braking system, delivers a range of 100 miles.

A healthy 280Nm of torque and 109bhp mean the Leaf’s performance should rival a petrol hatch’s. And the batteries can be topped up to 80 per cent in only 30 minutes using an optional quick charger.

The design incorporates bulbous vertical LED headlights, which help to redirect airflow away from the mirrors, reducing resistance.

Inside is a large touchscreen connected to a global data centre.

Prices will be revealed closer to launch in late 2010. However, Nissan claims they’ll be similar to a well equipped VW Golf’s, so expect it to start from £15,000.
