It’s been a long time coming, but the SAAB 9-4X has finally been signed off and production of the Volvo XC90-sized SUV has begun at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.
The car was originally previewed at the Detroit Auto Show at the beginning of 2008, and was slated to arrive in late 2009. However, the uncertainty surrounding the Swedish brand’s future has delayed the project until now.
With the 9-5 now on sale, bosses are keen to get the 9-4X into dealers, particularly in the US, where demand for SUVs of this type remain. The SAAB is built on the GM Theta platform, shared with the Cadillac SRX.
Despite its size, the 9-4X won’t be a seven-seater. Instead, it’ll offer more luxurious travel for up to five. A high level of standard kit is expected, with SAAB’s trademark night panel, green-on-black dials, intricate air vents and starter button mounted between the front seats all set to feature.
Under the bonnet, there’ll be a choice of two petrol units, a turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a turbo 2.8-litre V6, and a 2.9-litre diesel co-developed by VW Motori in Italy.

I can't see any point to this car. Plus, wasn't it based on some Chevy?
It's like car manufacturers can't hear the eco-mentalists at all.
"Build smaller, more efficient cars!"
"What's that, build another silly unnecessarily large and inefficient SUV? If you say so!"
Because this car and the car it is based on, the Cadillac SRX ARE much smaller than cars that have come before, the despite it's size comment is rather misleading, the primary market for this car is the US where it IS a smaller more efficient car when compared to many, and I am sure it will have many takers in the UK too!
The US, despite having much cheaper fuel prices is actually ahead of us in the hybrid vehicle stakes, if we took a leaf from their book we would have diesel hybrid family cars by now (very little diesel in the us but they have realised hybrids don't have to look like the Prius!!)
I see the point of this car (which is probably for middle class parents, living in Chelsea, to dropp of their kids at school.)
But why does it need four wheel drive? If it were to just be powered by front or rear wheels, it would far more eco friendly and be cheaper to make and buy. After all, this car will pretty much never go of road.
Why do people still go on about being eco friendly or associating a car with the Chelsea set to drop off their kids. If SAAB were only aiming this car at the Chelsea set, they wouldn't sell enough to pay for the testing let along make any profits. The aim of the car is worldwide. Also can I add, 4 wheel drive is not just about driving off road. There are parts of the word that spend 6 months or more covered in snow and ice. Other parts have dirt roads upon which you couldn't drive many cars. Please will people look further than the last news headline or emotive news reel on which to base their comments. Try thinking for yourself about the bigger picture and don't be led by people who know even less about it than you!
As for the car, I'm not sure its got much in the way of appeal other than it adds choice. It doesn't seem innovative enough in any sense to be exciting. Its a shame, since SAAB have a good name of which they just don't seem to be able to take advantage.
The design/look of the vehicle is paramount and I just can't see this car as having much to rave about. Sorry.
