SPIED: Mercedes CLS breaks cover

New star caught on camera during official photo shoot ahead of Paris show debut.

Mercedes CLS

20th July 2010

These are the pictures Mercedes didn’t want us to see! Months ahead of its official unveiling at the Paris Motor Show in October, the all-new CLS has been snared by our team of spy photographers completely undisguised during an official shoot in Germany.

This isn’t the first time that the four-door coupé has been caught unaware on a press shoot. Until now, though, it has always been obscured by a cover, a nearby building or a Merc employee.

In profile, you can see the car retains the swooping roofline of the pioneering original, but with the addition of chrome on the rubbing strips, window trim and bootlid, as well as glitzy LED running lights, the newcomer’s design is less understated and more in-your-face.

The same goes for the larger, more upright grille, with its bold horizontal bars. This is designed to match up with the recently revealed CL, and sets out the template for new Mercs. It also gives the car a more imposing presence on the road.

To create a sculpted look, a strong crease runs from the angular headlights all the way to the back of the CLS, where it meets the muscular
rear wheelarch – a cue borrowed from the E-Class Coupé.

Under the bonnet, a pair of petrol engines – also available in the CL – will take pride of place alongside the six-cylinder 350 CDI diesel. The new twin-turbo 4.7-litre V8 (dubbed 4.6 by Mercedes, despite a capacity closer to 4.7) produces 429bhp and 700Nm of torque – that’s
12 and 32 per cent more than the outgoing CLS 500 respectively. Fuel economy is improved by 22 per cent to 30mpg, too.

We’ll bring you all the official details closer to the car’s launch.

Don't like it

Even though I'm an MB fan I think it's a backward step. It looks very boring and has that same ugly back door/wing styling of the E and S. The headlights look a lot nicer but overall the car seems to have lost it's original exciting profile.

New CLS Big disappointment

Boy, if ever a successor turned out worse than its predecessor, then it's the new CLS...

Imitating the imitators

This new CLS reminds me of nothing so much as the VW Passat CC, which was itself inspired by the original CLS. At least the old CLS had looks that were striking enough to divide opinion; this one just looks like an S-class that's been sat on by a giant.

Ugly

The front grill on the current breed of Merc's has the look of a Lorry. No finesse and really ugly.

Big dissapointment

Looks like a pimp who got facelifted after pumping in the gym and got ugly! Still a "nice looking" car but the original was elegant and striking and original at the same time.

Ouch!

That's hideous. What's happened to MB design? The current C-class and new E-class are not nearly as beautiful or elegant as their predecessors, but this one's even worse... Now I suppose they'll go and ruin the SL and SLK next.

Oh Lord!
what is happening to German design?
Since Chris Bungle took over at BMW they seem to have gone down the "we must be modern and not stylish" route.
Sadly it will probably be a runaway success as most senior Company Managers follow each other like Lemmings.
