Lancia Stratos returns

1970s supercar to be resurrected for wealthy collector.

The Stratos is back! These pictures show an all-new version of Lancia’s legendary supercar from the 1970s reimagined for 2010.

Not only does the new Stratos bear a striking resemblance to the original car, it shares the same angular headlights and wheels as the Fenomenon NewStratos concept which was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2005.

The 2005 concept was designed by a consultancy to prove its capabilities, and the firm, based in London, actually owns the rights to the Stratos name after Fiat let its claim on the name lapse. And given the similarity between this mule and the concept, it’s likely that the Fenomenon firm is involved, and thus the finished car is likely to wear the Stratos badge.

The original car used a Ferrari engine, and that’s true of the newcomer too. It shares the same V8 engine and sequential gearbox as the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, and uses that car’s aluminium chassis too, albeit shortened to fit the Stratos’ small wheelbase.

Sadly, the car is a pet project of a wealthy collector, and not something that’ll be appearing in your local Fiat dealership any time soon.

But the car seen here was pictured on test at Fiat Group’s Balocco test track neat Milan, indicating that the Italian firm does at least have some involvement in the project. This could mean that small-scale production could follow, giving Lancia a retro-inspired halo model, like the 8C Competizione did for Alfa Romeo.

WHY ?

The original Stratos was developed for rallying.

Why build this car in an already overcrowded sports car market.

It's hardly a looker is it !

Another Fix It Again Tony car the world doesn't need if only Fiat concentrated on making their car more original rather than raising the dead!

UGLY DUCKLING

It has been great to see some famous cars from a by gone era getting a modern make over, those the like Lotus Esprit, 8C Competizione and even the Mini which look Fab and have design features that mimick those of the original but are given that modern day pizaz !

However to remake an old car that was designed 40 years ago and barely update the design is a travesty. It looks immediately dated, the original actually looks better.

its no good simply strapping big wheels on it.

Its damn ugly and should not be sold in any numbers !!

Maybe it will look better in the metal.

The original Stratos looked, sounded and went like nothing else, it was awesome. I have an abiding memory of one on a 70's RAC Rally . It was flat in 5th in around 10 seconds. The tarmac-shod cars actually had wheels as wide as those in the picture and needed them, but with the short wheelbase, ends were swopped very quickly indeed! I feel it could only be made like the old car and yes, it does look better.

Great!!

Great to see another legend reborn. I doubt it will have the character or the originality of the Stratos, but it is very close to the first car in terms of looks. Simple and elegant. Concern though is price. I hope they dont charge Ferrari price. If they target sub R8 and 911 market then it should do well. Price will be a factor. The original Stratos if can be found costs a fortune.

What's going on?

The world has moved on I'm afraid.

Edit: Happily, the car is a pet project of a wealthy collector...

...and that's where it should stay.
