When I saw the word "Gatsos" I thought ... "What the heck"?
You see I had the ... honor of meeting, once upon a time, a dubious real estate agent called "Gatsios" whose advertisement is seen in the National Road leading from Athens to Corinth!
In the meantime he or his son, have changed the name to "Gatsos".
You can imagine my surprise when I saw that Gatsos..... is making history in UK too!
Wishing everybody Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Year,
From Greece

So, given that these cameras have been switched off please could we have data showing accident rates comparing like with like - e.g., accidents for the same period from last year so July '09 to April '10 versus July '10 to April '11. My guess is that there will not be a statistically significant difference. The cops just want the money.
"Safety Cameras" total rubbish - just used to get even more money from hard pressed motorists. Swindon proved it when they switched off there cameras, accidents went DOWN!! Perhaps if the police got out of there stations and started nicking bad drivers who knows what else they might find in the cars. Or is nicking criminals not politically correct
Speed cameras do nothing to catch the uninsured, banned drivers, drunk drivers, dangerous drivers or vehicles with defects. Has anyone asked for the accident statistics in areas where the cameras have been switched off? They should be available under freedom of information laws.......
How the AA have changed. From being formed to help motorists avoid police speed traps in 1905 to joing the anti-motorist gravy train by helping the authorities make £££ from speed cameras that have zilch to do with road safety.
Perhaps AA DriveTech should run a course for councils/government on the road safety benefits of repairing our lethal, potholed, crumbling roads or treating roads properly during winter time. Funnily enough, I don't think that will happen as there's no money in it for them. Road safety is only of interest to the authorities when profit is involved.
Check out AA DriveTech here... Worth remembering when you come to renew your AA membership.

"The board that drives AA DriveTech forward includes Andrew Strong, Chief Executive Officer of the AA, Andy Bowland, Financial Director of the AA and Jim Kirkwood, Managing Director of AA DriveTech."

Something needs to be done to stop the idiot minority who are not fit to be on the road.
Speed cameras are not perfect, but they may have some impact, though all too often all these idiots do is to brake - often too hard - as they approach the camera and then stick their foot to the floor once they are past.
Average speed cameras are much more effective and their use should be extended.
Blame Home Office , ie the GOVERNMENT, They can't afford proper Police officers so we have plastic bobbys the Community service squad who have less powers than the volunteer special constables. The cameras were bound to be self funding in this climate. WE NEED MORE TRAFFIC officers not cameras. Cameras don't get the loony toons on phones, with fogs on, sitting in middle lane, doing 40 everywhere, general idiots that somehow acheived a licence. the ones that cause accidents. NO I am not an officer...
This action doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the already victimised motoring public of this country.
When the new government said they'd switch off stationary speed cameras mobile speed vans appeared everywhere more or less overnight around our area. And in the usual revenue-producing points such as newly reduced speed limit roads (that had their speed limit reduced for no logical or safety reason).
I counted three mobile speed cameras during a 30 minute journey one day - all illegally and dangerously parked - one completely blocking the pavement forcing pedestrians to walk into the road - how very safe!
All that said, something needs to be done about people not driving safely - most incompetent drivers dangerous driving is never captured on any speed camera. I'm also fed up of aggressive drivers hassling me for obeying speed limits - I got prosecuted for doing 34mph in a recently reduced 40 to 30 clear straight road, then the next day a lorry driver was sitting up my backside and flashing me for doing 30mph!
Decent drivers just can't win. There is no pleasure in driving in this country any more as we get it in the neck from the authorities and the legions of bad drivers / riders.
Never seen a bunch of flowers near a camera tax spot, the police are full of **it they are on days off to man the vans and get paid double time to do it, the only thing the cameras do is collect TAX
Rodge is quite correct when he says the AA does not have the interests of their members at heart, or motorists in general.
When you listen to Edmund King siding with the establishment rather than motorists it's sickening, he will be all for Gatso’s and any other camera that will make revenue.
As for the cops, " Well " it's expected from an organisation that runs itself on self importance and beaurocracy, it's far easier to go for the soft option which they are more than well known for, and sit in the office and just watch the fines pile up, than do proper police work protecting the public from felons !!!
