Brits plan new family, based on models from sister brand Porsche, five-door coupé to be joined by crossover, baby GT

The Bentley empire is spreading! Bosses are hard at work plotting models with bodystyles new to the marque – but it won’t be the usual VW technology underneath.

The cars will be underpinned by Porsche architecture – a fact confirmed to us by the new CEO of Bentley, Wolfgang Dürheimer, who is also outgoing head of R&D at Porsche.

First on the agenda, as we reported in Issue 1,136, will be a £150,000 five-door coupé version of the Continental GT. It was originally thought that Bentley would base this car on a version of the VW Group’s modular longitudinal platform that underpins the Audi A7 and the upcoming A9. But in light of the new boss’s revelation, it’s almost certain the next-generation Panamera will be the donor.

Petrol engine choices are expected to include a reworked version of the current W12 – with upwards of 600bhp – as well as the new turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, set to debut early next year in the Continental GT. An oil-burner shouldn’t be ruled out, either, after VW Group chairman, Dr Ferdinand Piech, told us recently: “You will see diesel at Bentley.”

A crossover is also under consideration, based on the Cayenne, although this Bentley 4x4 will have an even more luxurious interior and use the same engine range as the five-door coupé. The Cross Continental badge has been touted, along with a price of around £120,000.

Last, but certainly not least, is a £90,000 coupé to slot into the range below the Continental GT. This would be aimed squarely at the likes of the Maserati GranTurismo and Mercedes SL63 AMG. It should be a volume seller for Bentley, and could push annual registrations way beyond the 10,000 peak recorded in 2007.

Don’t expect to see this new family of models until the next Panamera arrives in 2015. In the meantime, the second-generation Continental GT will spawn new versions of the GTC drop-top and Flying Spur saloon, with similar styling and mechanical tweaks.

Oh dear! Hit by the Porsche ugly stick.

Stop trying to design cars AE, that third one is the most mangled, disproportioned gangrenous lump you've ever produced.

By JPW93 on 17 February, 2011, 12:17am

Oh Dear

If someone at VAG are even contemplating a Bentley SUV, they should be publicly shot, there are certain marques you dont mess with for the sake of sales, RR and Bentley are 2 of them. Saloons, coupes, possibly a shooting break, but not a bloody SUV!

Eww

Eww, eww, eww and furthermore, eww.

LOL

Yet MORE AE photoshoppery.
Lame as lame can be.

By Tazfan2 on 17 February, 2011, 7:46am

No,no,no and no.

If that SUV comes to fruition, Bentley's journey to the Dark Side will be complete. They will consolidate their position as the brand of choice for the nouveau riche, more-money-than-taste brigade.

A Bentley SUV?

Are there enough Gangsta rappers in the world to justify the development of this car?
Actually, I take it back. They'll sell to young men in the oil-rich Arab states who NEED something more prestigious than a Range Rover when they take their falcons out into the desert.
It's a tough life.

Utter rubbish!

By tomsks on 17 February, 2011, 9:00am

I hate this rubbish

I hate AE trying to imagine what a car will 'potentially' look like. Its headline grabbing tabloid rubbish. Its one of the reason why I do not subscribe to this toilet.

By f1moh on 17 February, 2011, 11:10am

Absolutely stunning!!

Can't agree with other comments - seems like these are from those who can't afford one (like me). If these cars come along as presented I think a Bentley will finally be worth saving for.......stunning

By Tonka on 17 February, 2011, 12:14pm

Holy S*it

What has happened to Bentley it almost looks like a Bristol, and thats not a compliment, they should have sepnt the money on a range rover type vehicle rather than these ugly cars. and I agree with f1moh, AE needs to give there head a shake, the emails I get are spammier than ever and theres more ads every week, I question the integrity of what used to be a great car magazine you could trust, now its just pure money money money. sad times.

Bentley SUV

That Bentley SUV is just vulgar.

No doubt it will sell well to premiership footballers though.

I remember the days when Bentleys were "Gentleman's express" tuned Rolls Royces.

That SUV just looks trashy, the worst of celeb-obsessed xfactoridolonice society.

By sirwiggum on 17 February, 2011, 1:26pm

holiest of holiest of all sh*it is this?

I thought Bentley or VW at times would appreciate some feedback, please if you don;t understand the brand you have bought then please just sell it to the arabs or someone who won't make a ford-Jag eqv of Bentley. Stop making these stupid cars. and no we don't need anymore SUV's ,small coupe's, we want proper big luxury saloon Bentley's and give ultimate luxury with proper V8 British muscle. if you can't understand this then just forget it!!

By corsamani on 17 February, 2011, 2:10pm

Integrity? What Integrity?

I really have to question AE's integrity here. How in the name of shit can they possibly predict how a car is going to look when it's still at least 5 years away from any kind of production, no matter what the speculative donor car might be. I'm sure Porsche don't even know what the next Panamera is going to look like, never mind whether bits of it are going to be used for this "next generation" Bentley.

For Christ's sake AE, stop treating us as if we're bloody morons or 6 year old impressionable kids by feeding us crap like this. You know, I'm seriously thinking of unsubscribing from your newsletter because it just gets filled with more crap with every release. Everyone is filled with "exclusives" and "Auto Express is first behind the wheel". Bullshit! You tell us precisely zilch, nada, nothing with these "exclusives".

By nick7 on 17 February, 2011, 4:53pm

addendum to above

this is EXACTLY why I stopped subscribing to the mag. Total and utter garbage in every issue.

By nick7 on 17 February, 2011, 4:56pm

addendum 2

Which is also why I stopped subscribing to Top gear Magazine. At one time AE was a good alternative but not any more. Sadly it's going the same way as Top Gear has.

Yugo if you want to...

WOW! Yugo have come a long way since the Sana.. ;)

AEwful

Please Auto Express take note of the comments that follow every rendering of a possible car that you decide to publish. You over-design them; often they're just plain ugly, but in many cases they simply over-promise and in reality the final product always under-deliver. Get your photoshop-wannabe-car designer, have a whip round in the office and send him on a car design course, so he can satisfy his creative leanings. Then just get back to the good old fashioned car magazine thing of actually reporting on real cars. Predictions are fine - the odd sketches and scoop photographs are titillating, but this full-on hard core pornographic rubbish is insulting to car marques, REAL car designers, and in the end, us eventual car owners.

Just what the recession needs

£120,000 for a car. Bored of seeing cars that I will never be able to afford (and would not buy even if I could afford).

By Monkeyboy76 on 18 February, 2011, 9:46am

These are ugly cars that will sell to who has more money than sense
big nobs will buy them lol

Bentley 5 door

My only design critique for this one is either have the rear doors open similar to the Mazda RX8 hinged on the C-piller with no exposed exterior door handles, or have the rear doors hinged on the B-pillars with conventional chromed door handles below the beltline similar to the fronts. That black door handle tucked in the corner of the window looks hideous. In any case, I hope it remains a pillarless hardtop.

Comments a waste of hot air??

Gentlemen, I suspect most of us find ourselves out of the reach of these wundermachines, Only a Pools win would clinch me being able to buy a current Bentley.
I'm wondering if AE take any notice of the posts at all, about anything.......the mag even being called a toilet [shock!!]. I'm almost certain Bentley would not take one iota of notice either. Maybe thats good, or bad, but perhaps they do their own "car clinicing" anyway.
So will the new car be called the Panam-entley??? Or the Bent-mera?? Even with [now here it comes] an obscene amount of money, I'd NEVER buy anything from Porsche, or anything with Porsche bits on/in it!!! Hate Porsche with a vengeance, mostly as I've never come across a more pig-headed screamingly arrogant car maker. Nowhere else on the planet is there a single individual whom thinks he can re-invent the laws of physics. Porsche with their collective heads up their arses think [STILL] they can. Hope the VW board is still slapping the Porsche board to death.
And Bentley......guess they have to grow, or die. Growing ugly is not always the best solution. What I want to know is will these three new models be seriously lighter. If not, in 2015 they could well be expensive, AND irrelevant.
Last question......will the beautiful mesh grilles be real metal, or plated plastic.....like the XF!!!

By barina47 on 28 February, 2011, 2:35am

What the hell were they thinking?

What is with supercar companies creating family cars? It won't boost sales, it'll just lose them money! Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Maserati, Spkyer, Jaguar, and now Bentley have all released design's to make an SUV. And they're all hopeless rubbish.
