Second sighting of Jaguar's new XE roadster reveals fresh interior details and shortened wheelbase

Just weeks after we brought you the first ever pictures of the hotly-anticipated Jaguar XE - the new roadster has been spied again - this time during hot weather testing in the US.

Designed to sit below the Jaguar XK in its sports car line-up, the XE will be a strict two-seater, aimed at stealing sales from key Porsche and BMW rivals.

As these pictures confirm, the newcomer will sit on a shortened chassis, with a heavily modified version of the rear-wheel drive platform from the current XK.

On the inside, this early prototype shares some of its part's with the XK, but it's possible to make out an all-new steering wheel, and the main touchscreen's large black surround suggests a host of new features in the works.

Despite being Jaguar's junior model, it should have no shortage of performance - this particular model sits on a set of aggressive 19-inch alloys and low-profile Dunlop tyres, while the 'R' logo is clearly visible on the big four-pot brake calipers.

Engine details are still scarce, but expect the XE to feature a range of V6 powerplants, mated to the British firm's smooth six-speed automatic gearbox. A flagship 'R' model, as well as a diesel variant are both strong possiblities.

Sources within the company have revealed that Jaguar is planning to reveal a concept version of the XE early next year, with sales to start in early 2013.

Move Forward Jaguar

I hope these shots are of a test mule and not the real thing. This is an old design from 10 years ago, just an XK with a shortened wheelbase and the boot lopped. And there is nothing new about the interior either! Come on Jaguar, we love you, but the XK's interior was never that good to start with. If you are going to bring out something to go after Porsche you'd better make it stunning and NEW. Finally it appears, Porsche are starting to break new, and exciting, ground with their designs. Don't get behind the curve. Innovate. Lead!

10 years? The current XK was an all new car FIVE years ago, the current XK was lightyears ahead of the XK8.

The interior, like the exterior is likely a work in progress (it is obviously only a test mule as it looks EXACTLY like an XK at first glance, or to the untrained eye).

Jaguars recent interiors have been nothing short of stunning, and much nicer than the slightly tacky looking Porsche interiors!!

i would ignore what it looks like. they are obviously testing the mechanics, handling and data collecting. just don't want that squarish grill on a coupe.
