Bentley SUV confirmed

The British brand is poised to take on the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover

Bentley SUV

By Sam Hardy

29th July 2011

It’s all go for Bentley’s SUV. Boss Wolfgang Durheimer has reportedly confirmed the British luxury brand will enter the SUV sector for the first time, taking on the likes of Range Rover.

Durheimer is the former head of R&D at fellow VW Group brand Porsche, where he developed the Cayenne, and has repeatedly hinted that a Bentley SUV was under consideration. It appears that expansion plans are behind the decision, as Bentley must increase its product range to deal with lean economic times.

SUVs are popular in the US, China and Europe – Bentley’s biggest markets – so Durheimer wants an off-roader that carries Bentley’s exclusivity.

There are no firm details on the new model, but Dürheimer told Auto Express at the Detroit Motor Show in January that it will be based on a heavily revised platform shared with the next-generation Porsche Cayenne. As well as using the four-wheel-drive chassis, Bentley’s position in the VW Group means it will also have access to petrol-electric hybrid power, as well as a host of high-performance diesels.

Prices are likely to exceed £90,000, with the new model targeting luxury off-roaders such as Range Rover and the top end of the Cayenne line-up. Expect Bentley’s SUV to arrive in 2013.

More Horror

Being part of the VW group, I suppose this isn't surprising, as they already have a vast array of ugly SUVS in all of their brands, from Skoda, Seat, VW, Audi, Porsche, and now Bentley - god forbid. Nothing is sacred from the Wolfsburg Vampire Vomit Vultures.

@terryxp

Not sure if the Rolls Mini thing sarcasm or not but that IS coming, the £40k+ Mini inspired by Goodwood is due to go on sale soon.

And what exactly is wrong with a Bentley SUV and in addition what is wrong with this article about one?

No accounting fors taste......?

People still feel the need to inexplicably buy a vauxhall..........at least the German company that will build the Bentley SUV stands a chance of producing a quality product.

At least it's not GM trash.

What took them so long???

The usual jelly mould crap from the VW group. Im surpised they never did it years ago, when sales for SUV's were booming, now its in a bit of decline.

lmao @ German quality, dont flatter yourself "wrbowman"

I'm afraid that you are disillusioned if you think that only German companies produce quality cars. You need to broaden your mind. Companies like Ford, Vauxhall, Hyundai and Kia have moved on. Not everyone can and wants to pay inflated prices for a car just because it has a german badge on the bonnet.

And how many people have £90,000 in their back pocket.

Time to get into the real world I think.

Cheap as chips

Matt, I agree, not many people have the £90k in their back pocket now, but think ahead. In a few short years, we wont need that £90k. Who would think it possible to pick up a Bentley for as little as £40k ? It may be hideous but I would rather that than a new Ford/GM

HMMMM

I am surprised Bentley has decided to go for an SUV model, as it doesn't really fit in the brand image. But i am sure they will have some very good engineers and designers on the project and surprise everyone, and will fit right in.
By the way Bentley is still British!! Just has a little German help, but still British!!!

April fools joke?

What the hell is this about? These money hungry companies are forgetting the true identity. SUV Bentley? perhaps for the Arabs and Russians as this is tasteless and weighs several tons with fuel economy to be laughed at. Also the £90k price bracket is making the brand cheaper, even though its a glorified Q7

Bentley, why?

I don't understand why Bentley feel the need to build this vehicle, logic dictates that there is a very small market for it. SUV sales have been declining for a few years now and the established SUV manufacturers are struggling to sell their products even though the vast majority of them cost way less than 90 grand.

Then there is the image problem, the SUV class just isn't Bentley territory and never will be. It would make much more sense for Bentley to produce a BMW 5 series rival because I reckon it would sell like hot cakes. VW have always had a bit of a problem shifting the Phaeton. Scrap it I say, develop the floorpan and get Bentley to make it some new clothes et voila, a baby Bentley is born.

Truly AWFUL...

Cant believe how terrible that thing above looks. Its so terrible it makes a SSangYong Rodius look beautiful!

There certainly is a market for a Bentley SUV! But it must have another name!

In these funny times with so many people without any real sense just swimming in millions there certainly is a market for an exclusive bespoke Bentley SUV.

It must certainly have another name like Khamsin etc and it really must have a top interterior and a very poised front grill and bonnet!

And its metallic colour choices must really be ultra exclusive

WO Bentley would have loved this challenge!

Just do it!

If its spun off the Aye-canne or Toe-rag.....NO POINT. I'd rather spend my money on another from the VW stable, the Q7. Yeah, have a laugh. What seems inane about a Bentley SUV, is the market for these behemoths is shrinking, and hells bells, not before time. And sorry, what does the ever so trendy non-sensical acronym stand for?? Sports utility vehicle?? Umm, so what is sporty about ANYTHING on 4 wheels that weighs over 2 tonne? Answer.....nothing. Next, utility.....a name blantantly stolen from a far more long standing serious form of vehicle, usually abreviated to 'ute', and a workhorse [mostly] to boot, and almost exclusively with 2 doors, till king-cabs came to beset us. There is not an iota of the 'utility' in these urban beasts. Oh, they can be 'utilised' for running over small children. I'll have to concede to 'V'......it is a vehicle. It is my belief Bentley can do [much] better than this, but hey I'd never be buying one, under any circumstances, but then fellas they are not looking to sell them to you and me. A brand new mid-size super luxury 4-door, RWD only, weighing in at a max of 1.8 tonnes, with the new twin turbo'd V8, to beat the pants off the M5 would make sense to me. Then Bentley could sell them all over the world, instead of a few growing markets. But please please not another Cygnet.
