Drug-driving shake up

The Government is considering changing the laws on drug-driving to make conviction easier. But are the changes an improvement?

Drug driving shake up

By Julie Sinclair

06th January 2012

New drug-driving legislation could soon allow police officers to test drivers at the roadside. But should they take a zero-tolerance stance? We’d like to know what you think.

The Government is currently seeking advice from medical professionals to decide upon the levels of key recreational drugs, such as cannabis and cocaine, that would impair driving.

The information would then be used to help create a new criminal offence of driving a car shortly after taking these illegal drugs.

Currently, police have to prove driving was impaired by the drug use in order to bring charges.

What do you think of the proposed changes? Tell us your views in the comments below…

Jail them

There should be no mercy for those taking drugs behind the wheel. They are a menace to society.

Clueless people would say lock them up. But as channel 5 proved on a test, people under the infulence of a small amount of cannabis are actually slower and steadier drivers than those who have had none!

A reasonable limit needs to be installed like alcohol (which is more dangerous than heroin and kills more per year !!!)
