Nearly half the 300 cars Rolls-Royce has sold since launching the luxury Phantom 12 months ago have gone to America. Only 10 per cent have been registered in the UK, and production is now running at full capacity of five models a week. Meanwhile, new Rolls-Royce dealerships are about to open in China and South Korea.

MGF designer is back
British vehicle designer Gerry McGovern is to head a new concept car studio for Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover. McGovern, who penned the MGF and Freelander, was most recently in charge of Ford's London styling studio, Ingeni, but it has been closed down in a round of cost-cutting. His new job will be based at Gaydon, Warks.

Tow woe for Explorer
U-Haul, the largest trailer and removal van rental company in the US, has announced that it won't hire out trailers to any customer driving a Ford Explorer. The firm says it can't afford to defend the product liability lawsuits linked
with the controversial off-roader, which was previously involved in the Bridgestone tyre fiasco.

Rail failure hits Detroit
The public days of the North American International Auto Show were in danger of being very quiet after the Detroit People Mover broke down. The PM is a three-mile-long overhead monorail that runs between the venue, hotels, car parks and restaurants. But it ground to a halt only three days before the doors were due to be opened to the public, leaving city bosses looking for a vital spare part. As Auto Express went to press, things had yet to be resolved...

Lincoln's triple treat
Ford-owned Lincoln unveiled three new cars at the Detroit show. The Mark X - pronounced Mark 10 - is the first two-door convertible concept the company has built to feature an electric folding hard-top. Meanwhile, the Aviator is a new version of Lincoln's popular SUV. Finally, there was the Mark LT, which is claimed to be the world's first luxury pick-up.
