Recall As Rough Stuff Cuts Up Porsche's Peak Performer

Porsche build quality is about to get dragged through the mud - by a mountain bike! These two-wheelers are renowned for coping with tough terrain, but it seems the maker's premium full-suspension bicycle - priced nearly £5,000 - can't cope and is being recalled.

23rd February 2004

Unlike with vehicle callbacks, Porsche has no way of contacting bike owners - which is why it has turned to Britain's top-selling weekly car magazine for help.

The firm has told us there's a fault with the carbon fibre stem that connects the handlebars to the frame. Around 200 Porsche bikes have been sold in the UK, and all will be repaired for free. So if you or anyone you know owns one of these exclusive two-wheelers, call 0118 925 3666 so the carbon fibre parts can be replaced with aluminium ones. Engineers will also change the seat post, which is made from the same material.

Owners of Porsche's flagship Carrera GT must be hoping the carbon fibre on their car proves to be more durable than that on the bicycles...
