Porsche has topped-off the launch of the Porsche 918 hybrid supercar by announcing that it has set a stunning lap time around the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife.
Lapping the circuit in a record time of 6mins 57 seconds, the new 918 is close to half a minute quicker than the Carrera GT and only 10 seconds shy of the non-road legal outright record set by the Pagani Zonda R.
Porsche has confirmed that four different test drivers lapped under the seven-minute mark, although the video above shows factory driver Marc Lieb at the wheel. We wait to see if Ferrari or McLaren will attempt to break the 918’s record with the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1.
McLaren was rumoured to have made an attempt at a time below seven minutes, but didn't quite achieve this aim, recording a 7min 04 lap. Armed with the knowledge of Porsche's record, and its on-board footage, no doubt the British firm will return to Germany for another shot at setting a time.
By comparison the 918 heads an illustrious group of supercars in the 'Ring lap time rankings:
Porsche 918 Weissach Edition 6m57
Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition 7m14
Corvette C6 ZO6 7m22
Nissan GT-R 7.24
Porsche 991 911 GT3 7m25
