New Russian owners haven’t stopped the Dutch brand’s ability to produce a winning tyre, as this is Vredestein’s third victory in as many years. Much like its previous successes, this year’s result is based on a stellar performance across all the wet track tests, which make up half the overall score. None was better, which was enough to keep the Sportrac 3 in the lead to the end, despite rivals doing better in dry braking and rolling resistance – key to improving fuel economy. A worthy champion, which should also save you a few pounds over the big names.

An even performance across all disciplines from the German maker. It was among the best in the wet, particularly curved aquaplaning, and managed, unlike most rain masters, to match that in the dry and in rolling resistance tests.

One for those on a budget, this Korean-built tyre from Kumho was more than £20 cheaper than the top brands. Another to thrive when the heavens opened, particularly when braking, it wasn’t disgraced in the dry, and that was enough to earn our commendation.
