Speed trap locator

If you’ve already invested in a portable sat-nav system, this is the locator for you, as it does all you need at a cracking price. The Talex picked up on all the fixed and mobile sites on our 14-mile, 20-trap route, quickly spotting when a camera had been passed. We also liked the fact that the voice warnings included the speed limit, allowing the driver to keep their eyes on the road. Well worth a place on your dash-top.

RoadPilot GO
Price £149.95

Another from the bargain basement end of the market, but it does everything you need to stay the right side of the law. The display is really small, but it still unearthed all our camera sites. Voice warnings included the speed limit, and the database also covered Europe.

Snooper Syrius
Price £299.95

Widescreen Syrius replaces Snooper’s pioneering Indago, but it does a similar job and the controls are familiar. It worked well on fixed cameras, although it didn’t have data for mobile sites. Warnings were clear, and included verbal limit and an on-screen countdown.

Road Angel 7000
Price £299.99

For camera spotting, this is the best of the combination units, although you have to pay for the extra functions. It made a good job of flagging up our traps, including the mobile sites, with voice alerts and on-screen speed limit display. A tempting blend of performance and features.

What we looked for

Legislation will outlaw detectors which spot laser or radar-based speed traps later this year, but locators still thrive, and have been joined by systems incorporating satellite navigation.

All units now use Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites to locate you, and a database to find the traps. False alarms are irritating, so we wanted our system to spot only cameras which affected us, and not those for oncoming traffic. GPS also had to be swift and accurate, and the database up to date. We took into account cost, including subscription, for our contenders.
