The RAC and the AA are the two powerhouses in the breakdown world, and offer virtually identical cover. The RAC’s average response time is the same as the boys in yellow at 40 minutes, but the provider claims to fix more cars at the roadside, with 83 per cent of its members sent on their way. It boasts 2,000 patrols, providing cover for its eight million customers. There’s no call-out fee and no additional charge for labour – no matter how long a repair takes.
