The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is a stretched version of the Coupe with extra doors and the same powerful engines

Luxurious cabin, striking looks, excellent handling
No small engines, narrow boot, expensive options

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is BMW’s first direct rival to the Mercedes CLS, although the Mercedes has been around for longer. It uses the same platform as the 6 Series Coupe, but stretched by 113mm, to allow lots of rear legroom and a decent-sized boot with the rear seats folded down. Handling is impressive for such a large car – although you’ll have to spend on options if you want to get the most from the chassis. Petrol choices include the V8 650i and six-cylinder 640i, while the bestseller in the UK will be the 640d.

Viewed from the front it’s hard to tell the Gran Coupe apart from the Coupe. It uses the same shark-like nose and forward-slanting grille to create an aggressive front end. The stretched profile and low-slung roof give it a surprisingly sporty look for something measuring over five metres in length.



For a car weighing around 1,850kg the Gran Coupe handles brilliantly. Variable dampers come as standard and provide a comfortable ride, even in the firmest Sport+ mode. Opt for the Active Drive system, which adds active anti-roll bars, and the car stays flat in the corners and feels beautifully balanced. Another option is the Integral Active Steering system, which steers the rear tyres as well as the fronts and means the well-weighted steering responds crisply to your inputs. The 316bhp 640i is a cracking engine that revs freely and makes a fantastic noise, while the 444bhp 650i, with its 4.4-litre turbo V8, is ferociously quick. But the 640d trumps them both by delivering a storming 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds, and superb fuel economy.



All engines offered with the Gran Coupe have been tried and tested elsewhere in the range – so major mechanical problems should be few and far between. A huge range of optional safety equipment is offered including Surround-view, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Park Assist, Lane Change Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System, Speed Limit Display and a full colour Head-up Display so you can keep your eyes on the road at all times.



The dashboard is identical the Coupe's, so it's slanted towards the driver and features the same enormous 10.2-inch display. Materials and build quality are exceptional and there’s a wide range of interior trim and exterior paint options. BMW brands the Gran Coupe a 4+1, as opposed to the 2+2 Coupe, so a dexterous fifth passenger can straddle the centre console, but because the centre section is raised there’s limited headroom. Rear legroom is generous, and unlike the Coupe the rear seats fold flat, boosting the narrow boot from 460 litres to 1,265 litres. A ski hatch also lets you poke longer objects through.

Running Costs


All engines come with stop-start and BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission. The results are astonishing with the 640d returning economy of 50.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 148g/km, while still covering 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds. The 640i posts the same 0-62mph time, but uses far more fuel with a combined figure of 36.2mpg. The 650i is inevitably the least efficient of the bunch, but is the first V8-powered BMW to emit less than 200g/km of CO2. An M6 Gran Coupe, with 552bhp from its twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 tops the range.
