BMW looks set to introduce a new range-topping X4 to its ever-expanding lineup, after our spies spotted this heavily camouflaged prototype testing in Spain. Several design tweaks and a new exhaust system could indicate this as an M Performance model possibly badged as the M40i.
Most noticeable at the front is a darkened kidney grille and the swathes of body cladding around the lower section of the body indicate a new body kit could be fitted to differentiae it from the current xDrive35i range-topper. However, there aren’t enough styling changes that would denoted this as the X4M. Unique wing mirrors, lowered suspension and a more aggressive exterior look usually indicted the performance flagship models.
At the rear, BMW has failed to hide the most obvious change, the new exhaust system. Rather than the pair of tailpipes positioned to the left side of the rear bumper on the most powerful xDrive35i, this prototype can be seen with two oval pipes at either side of the bumper.
Under the bonnet is likely to be a more potent version of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, with power possibly up 296bhp to around 340bhp. Currently, however, UK buyers only have the option of diesel powered X4s, meaning if this is a higher-powered petrol model the likelihood of it being made available in the UK is slim.
