After taking over the financially struggling Lotus team at the last possible moment in 2015, the French car manufacturer knows it faces a long and difficult road back to the kind of success it enjoyed during its previous stint as a works squad from 2002 to 2010. It has invested heavily in personnel to make it happen, but readily admits it could be three years before it wins again and five years before it can challenge for a world title. Regular points finishes will be the aim initially, as it tries to make up the horsepower deficit to Ferrari and the all-conquering Mercedes squad.
Our verdict: Magnussen is keen to make the most of this chance after being dropped by McLaren. Palmer is a promising talent with a mature approach.
