The first US team to enter Formula One since the unrelated Haas-Lola outfit raced back in 1986, American machine-tool magnate Gene Haas’ squad seems to be taking a sensible approach to the challenge. It’s getting partner Ferrari and race-car constructor Dallara to supply much of its car, only manufacturing the bare minimum amount of parts necessary itself to qualify as a constructor with the FIA. It’s hired two decent drivers and will be aiming for respectable pace and race finishes initially, before targeting the midfield in the long term.

Our verdict: Grosjean proved his speed at Lotus, while underrated Gutierrez deserves his second chance, having spent last season as Ferrari test/reserve driver.
