Jaguar

Exploding into Britain amid the grip of post-war austerity, the XK120 caused a sensation when it was launched at London’s Earls Court Motor Show in 1948. Originally conceived as a low-volume dream car, the sleekly styled body was built in aluminium, yet as demand took off, it was re-tooled in cheaper, but heavier, steel.

Fixed-head and drophead coupé models became available in 1952 and 1953, and by 1954, when XK120 production stopped, a total of 12,064 had been sold. But it was only the lucky few in the UK who got their hands on one, as most cars were exported to the US. Later XK120s were more comfortable and offered better refinement, yet the 200 early aluminium cars were the most sought after, as the lightweight models launched Jaguar’s motorsport success.

The car in our pictures is the most famous example in the world – NUB 120 was campaigned by owner Ian Appleyard and driven to two Alpine Rally victories. The 3.4-litre twin cam engine, rugged chassis and lightweight body meant it was an accomplished competition machine.

Now one of the most celebrated Jags of all, the XK120’s motorsport achievements paved the way for the world-beating C and D-Types, while its sales success in America established Jaguar as one of the most desirable sports car brands.

Even today, driving an XK120 is a special experience – the big steering wheel, high floor and cramped cabin mean short legs are a plus! But its blend of looks, pace and history ensure this doesn’t matter.
