Meet the Jekyll and Hyde RX-8. The rotary-engined coupé has left owners running hot and cold with gushing praise, followed by frustrated ranting. You voted the RX-8 into the top 10 in four categories, and are delighted about the way it drives. But this comes at a cost. In fact, you tell us it's the worst car in the top 100 for big bills. Its the unique engine that's to blame, with crippling fuel economy matched by a need for regular oil top-ups. Still, 96 per cent said the car had lived up to expectations.

A brilliant top five position for one of Japan's top firms. Coming under the Ford umbrella, Mazda has finished a full 15 places ahead of its parent firm. Even more satisfying is that the one place gained in our chart has been at the expense of premium brand BMW. With a broad range and plenty of new models on the horizon, Mazda will be hoping to continue the upward trend in 2008.
