Upside: Performance and initial price.
Downside: lose warranty, suspect Superchips warranty will not fill the gap. Enhanced power / torque will put extra strain on engine / transmission. Are these components rated to deal with the extra power and torque? Need to tell your insurance company, many don't like 'chipped' cars and will either refuse cover or increase the premium, possibly by quite a lot. Impact on resale value could be interesting.
All in all quite a high risk proposition.
"...the Bluefin unit will store the GTI’s factory settings so you can revert back to the original 207bhp any time you like"
It simple really - if your car needs VW warranty work, just reset back to the factory map. Same when you sell the car. No trace will be left of the remap - the performance map overwrites the factory map when it is uploaded and vice-versa when you reset to standard.
In the interest of editorial balance, there are plenty of very good companies out there offering similar maps, not just superchips. Any good owners forum will contain a wealth of advice in which ones are worth considering.
Don't we have short memories?
You forgot to thank Ford and the Focus. The Golf''s rear suspension is a copy of the still brilliant Focus's, ( I believe VW headhunted the Ford man who designed it, to update the ageing Golf's rear set-up) Without it I wonder where the Golf would be today? I own a 1999 focus Zetec (bought new) which I still own and is still superb in the handling department when compared to many other new cars that I drive.
If this GTI is so good, why not arrange a comparison test between it and the RS?
The GTI now has sublime handling...... The Focus had it over ten years ago!
Why chipping companies don't provide a unit to attach somewhere under the hood and a button inside so you can change between factory and tuned settings?? Could cost e.g. a couple of hundreds more but how handy would that be!
For only £435 this Superchips conversion will turn your MkVI GTI into a front-wheel drive Golf R, for a fraction of the cost. And it’s not just a case of searing acceleration either – the ECU remap gives the whole car an edgier feel from the exhaust note to the throttle response. But there’s a downside – install the software and you can kiss your manufacturer’s warranty goodbye - a big risk to take. If you’re feeling brave though, it’s a bargain for the thrills on offer.
