Peugeot 5008 vs. Grand Scenic

Peugeot hopes its stylish, versatile new 5008 will shake up the seven-seater MPV market. But can it beat the established Grand Scenic from Renault?

Peugeot has got the family car bit between its teeth! The RCZ coupe is busy stealing headlines, but the firm isn’t neglecting more practical matters. First came the 3008 crossover, while the latest double-0 model provides seven seats. The 5008 is a full-sized MPV, putting it up against some serious rivals.

They don’t come much tougher than the Renault Grand Scenic. Only last week, its little brother, the five-seat Scenic, saw off the challenge of the new Vauxhall Meriva in diesel guise and range-topping Exclusive trim.

That puts it on a level footing with the Grand Scenic Dynamique dCi 160 TomTom on price. Both are packed with safety equipment, loaded with family-friendly features and have similar power outputs and seating layouts.

It’s likely to be a closely fought contest – but which seven-seater will come out on top?

The 5008 is much better than the Grand Scenic

The 5008 have much better guality than the Grand Scenic. The Grand Scenic feel cheap compared to the 5008. The 5008 drives much better and still is very comfortable. The 5008 have better safety, as the Grand Scnic doesn't have airbag for 3'rd row.
Access to 3'rd row in the Grand Scenic is much more difficult because of smaller doors and and a system that risk crushing the feets of the children in the 3'rd row. The 156hp Turbo petrol engine of the 5008 is a superior engine with the refinement only a petrol can give and pulling power close to the 2.0 diesel.

Compared to SMAX ?

Any thoughts how the Peugeot compares to an S-Max? Thinking of either a new 5008 or 1-2 year old S-Max. In an initial test drive of the Peugeot the interior seemed superior to S-Max. ( not too pushed on the Scenic digital dashboard). I haven't seen the new S-Max but there's about a 7k price difference (in Ireland).

Renault still the master

As a Renault Scenic owner i am not surprised that you prefer the Renault - they are masters in this particular field. The new model just recently launched in South Africa is particularly well finished and is a nice advance over the previous model, also still the best looking of the mpv s now available, the Peugeot somehow looks awkward altho we have not yet seen this one it looks similar to the 3008 which is certainly a bit wierd to look at.

Are you insane?

Sometimes I wonder whether you drive the vehicles you review. Having experienced both of these, I could not agree less with your overall conclusion. The Peugeot is smart, high quality and has great features. It is also comfortably normal by design. In addition it is likely to prove reliable, unlike any Renault I have ever owned...

5008 or S-Max

I like the 5008 better than the old S Max. The S Max have a bit more luggage space with all 7 seats in use, and the 3'rd row seat can take adults better, so if you need this the S Max is for you. If you go for the 5008 turbo petrol it drives as good as the S Max. The smaller engined 5008 are missing some stabilisers and you can feel the difference. The large diesels have these, but are to nose heavy and have a poor turning radius. So the different 5008 engine versions, don't drive the same. I tested different 5008 versions for 3 full days before deciding for the turbo petrol. I also feel that the interior of the 5008 feel more high quality than the S Max

Facts and Figures

Verdict

Buyers really are spoiled for choice here. Both of our contenders are practical family models, and with a revised Ford S-MAX on the horizon, this segment has never been stronger. The new 5008 proves that Peugeot is on the comeback trail, following up the success of the excellent RCZ coupe. But is the seven-seater good enough to beat the godfather of the compact MPV sector? Nearly. With plenty of equipment, a competitive price and strong engine, it’s a fine choice. Lower running costs and superior predicted residual values add to the appeal, but the Renault clinches a narrow victory. Setting the Grand Scenic apart is its
sharper handling, spacious and user-friendly seating in the second and third rows, plus a versatile load area. The firm that invented the MPV concept remains at the top of the game.
