A special edition Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse has been revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show and it promises to be the fastest ever version of the Italian supercar. Named after Lamborghini's recently founded motorsport department, the Squadra Corse is based on the Gallardo Super Trofeo race car, although it's fully road-legal, and will debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.
Its motorsport pedigree means it shares the same 570bhp 5.2-litre V10 engine as the race car and has the same technical underpinnings as the Gallardo Superleggera. Power is delivered through a robotized e-gear six-speed transmission operated via steering wheel mounted paddles. This, coupled with the permanent all-wheel drive system, helps the Squadra Corse achieve its sprint from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds and top speed of 199mph. To ensure it stops as well as its accelerates, carbon ceramic discs have been fitted.
To maximize performance, Lamborghini has crafted the Squadra Corse entirely from aluminium and carbon fibre. It tips the scales at a lean 1,340 kg, 70kg less than the standard Gallardo LP 560-4.
The large rear wing, which is shared with the Gallardo Super Trofeo race car, is also constructed from carbon fibre and achieves three times as much downforce as the standard cars' wing. Another element taken from the race car is the removable engine hood with quick-release system.
Like the exterior, the interior is dominated by carbon fibre and Lamborghini makes effective use of Alcantara. Not wanting the Squadra Corse to be as ferocious as the race car its based on, Lamborghini will offer customers the option of comfort seats in place of racing bucket seats.
Available in yellow, white, red or grey with an Italian flag inspired racing stripe, no prices have yet been announced for the Squadra Corse.
The Squadra Corse is likely to be the final hurrah for the Lamborghini Gallardo as it's replacement – expected to be named the Cabrera – is due sometime next year. Power a expected to come from revised version of the 5.2-litre V10, with power in the region of 600bhp.
