McLaren releases first picture of 12C Spider, featuring the 616bhp twin-turbo V8 engine from the MP4-12C

Just 12 months since the hard top McLaren MP4-12C went on sale, the British firm has announced the next car in its plans, the 12C Spider.

This image released by the British carmaker, teases what the roofless McLaren will look like when it debuts later this year.

It will get the updated, 616bhp twin-turbo V8 from the MP4-12C, which should allow the newcomer to accelerate from 0-62mph in just over three seconds and onto a top speed of around 200mph.

The roadster will employ all McLaren’s racing expertise and should retain the same super-stiff, carbon fibre MonoCell chassis as the MP4-12C in the hopes of keeping the drive just as sharp as the hard top model.

Not to mention the fact that by folding down the roof, there’s nothing separating driver and passenger from the noise of that twin-turbo V8.

We expect the 12C Spider to be officially revealed in the coming weeks, with a price tag of around £190,000 when it arrives in showrooms at the end of the year.

The monocell should make the 12C work better than other cars with the top down.

Mclaren are the masters of open-topped motoring after all, and their F1 cars use a similar construction.
