Mercedes’ reborn Maybach brand is set to join the battle for luxury SUV sales

The badge has only just returned – on the Mercedes-Maybach S600 – but already bosses at Mercedes are planning on widening its reach.

The move would make perfect sense, as the sector is enjoying an unprecedented level of interest.

Range Rover and Porsche Cayenne sales are buoyant, and Bentley has confirmed its intention to move into the market with the newly named Bentayga.

Rolls-Royce, too, will make a decision on its long-mooted SUV this year, and even Lamborghini has its eyes on a piece of the action with the Urus.

Asked directly at the Detroit Motor Show if Mercedes intended to join the fray with Maybach, boss Dr Dieter Zetsche said: “Most likely!”.

Mercedes’ most upmarket SUV at present is the GL, although a new model, badged GLS to highlight its relationship with the S-Class, is on the way. A Maybach-badged version of that car seems inevitable.
