Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Coupe revealed

Mercedes unveils flagship S65 AMG Coupe, set to arrive in the UK later this year priced from £183,065

For those who approved of the S65 AMG’s imperious performance, but weren’t so taken by the idea of four doors, Mercedes has now revealed a Coupe version of its ultimate S-Class.

Just like the saloon, SL65 AMG and G65 AMG, it features a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine producing 621bhp and 1,000Nm of torque. Driving the rear wheels via a seven-speed Speedshift automatic box, the engine can take the S-Class Coupe to 62mph in 4.1 seconds, two tenths of a second quicker than the S65 AMG. The top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, with the Euro 6 emissions standards-compliant engine managing a claimed 23.7mpg and emitting 279g/km CO2.

Chrome detailing helps the 65 AMG model stand out from the S63 AMG Coupe, most notably up front where it replaces the black mesh finish for the grille and air intakes. Elsewhere there are also more intricate 16 spoke, 20-inch alloys, a larger rear diffuser and – in case all this passes unnoticed – bold ‘V12 BITURBO’ badges on both flanks.

Inside, there’s a heads-up display and Mercedes’ new touchpad for the Bentley Continental GT Speed rival, while the AMG-developed sport seats are electrically adjustable, coming with memory function and heating. Climate control is standard, too, and an Exclusive package adds nappa leather upholstery and diamond-pattern perforation for the seats.

Mercedes’ new range topping S-Class Coupe also joins the S63 AMG Coupe in offering an innovative curve tilting function, which apparently enables the car to “lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier.” Active between 9mph and 112mph, it’s designed for a more comfortable driving experience, rather than to reach higher cornering speeds. Like on the standard Coupe, the Magic Body Control system comes as standard.

Backing this up is the German manufacturer’s speed-sensitive variable steering, which provides more assistance when in ‘Comfort’ suspension mode and stiffens up for a more precise experience when in the ‘Sport’ setting.

Meanwhile, safety and comfort are given a boost by the Intelligent Drive system, which sees the S65 AMG Coupe gain 360 degree camera, Active Parking Assist Tech, surround sound, keyless go, and Driving Assistance package Plus.

The S65 AMG Coupe is to arrive in the UK towards the end of this year and Mercedes has confirmed prices will start from £183,065 – a £3,080 premium over the S65 AMG saloon.
