New BMW and Audi for Paris

New front-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series and Audi Q2 crossover will debut at September's Paris Motor Show

Both BMW and Audi will debut significant smaller models at the Paris Motor Show in September.

A new front-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series will be revealed, most likely badged as the BMW 1 Series GT. Using the same platform as the forthcoming MINI, it’s the first model in an expanded 1 Series line-up that will see a broader model range with a coupe and convertible models named ‘2 Series’.

The 1 Series GT and new MINI are being co-developed and will use the same 1.5-litre three cylinder engine variants, with performance models powered by turbocharged four-cylinders.

The 1 Series GT will arrive in showrooms in late 2014.

The Audi Q2 will debut at Paris, too – but in concept form. Rivalling compact SUVs such as the Nissan Juke, the A1-based cross-over will feature radical styling with influences from the Quattro concept car, mixed with a swooping rear roofline.

A production version is likely to arrive in 2013, priced at around £25,000.

The Paris Motor Show runs from 29 September through to 14 October.
