Soaring fuel prices threaten to force drivers off road

A return to £1-a-litre fuel would make 22 per cent of drivers abandon their cars and find alternative transport.

And a price hike to £1.50 would make 42 per cent of users do so. That's according to insurer More Than. Its research found 11.5 million UK car owners cut back on road trips in the past year due to bigger bills. David Pitt of More Than said: "Rising fuel prices have an impact on motorists' behaviour."

Meanwhile, 11 filling stations are closing every week, leaving the UK with fewer forecourts than it had in 1914. Nearly 600 shut down last year, bringing the total to 9,764, says an annual survey by the Energy Institute. The report confirmed that petrol sales continue to be in decline, falling 18.5 per cent in the past decade, even though there are now more cars on the road.
