The three-wheeled, open-top Polaris Slingshot has been revealed, set to go on sale in America first

America is getting in on the three-wheeled action and lightweight track car market with the bonkers Polaris Slingshot. Designed and manufacturer by a company who specialise in snowmobiles and motorbikes, the angular and edgy Slingshot starts from $19,999 in the US.

It bares a slight resemblance to the KTM X-Bow only with one-less wheel and more prominent bodywork. The panels spill over the 18-inch front forged aluminium wheels exposing the suspension, with the lack of bodywork meaning the Slingshot weighs only 790kg.

The Slingshot is powered by a 2.4-litre petrol engine developing 174bhp and 225Nm of torque, which is paired with a 5 speed manual gearbox – as of yet no performance figures have been made available.

Two models will be offered to buyers, the base model and a more lavish SL variant ($23,999) fitted with larger wheels, USB connectivity, Bluetooth and a 4.3-inch LCD screen. Other standard features on both models include traction control, LED front and rear lights, power assisted steering and waterproof seats.

As the Slingshot only has three wheels, in America it’s classed as a motorcycle not a motorcar. It’s not yet know whether the Slingshot will make its way over to UK shores.
