Hyundai i10

Big-car options keep tiny Hyundai at the head of the field

Why it won...

Competition in the city car sector is hotter than ever – and that makes the Hyundai i10’s second consecutive victory in this category even more impressive. The Korean baby has been forced to work hard to hold on to its crown, though, with a stylish facelift and an all-new eco-friendly variant helping to cement its place at the top.

Despite its dinky dimensions, the i10 has the feel of a big car inside, while its composed driving dynamics mean it’s as much at home on the open road as on congested city streets. As part of the mid-life refresh, the willing 1.2-litre engine has been joined by an efficient new 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit in the Blue model. This promises CO2 emissions of only 99g/km and a fuel-sipping 67.3mpg at the pumps.

All models benefit from a generous level of standard kit, with range-topping Style versions including executive car treats such as heated seats, an electric sunroof and leather-trimmed steering wheel. Added peace of mind comes courtesy of the brand’s brilliant Triple Care package, which provides a comprehensive warranty, breakdown cover and annual health checks for a period of five years. The company also enjoys a hard-won reputation for excellent customer service, which should help to take the pain out of the ownership experience.

And with prices from only £8,195 for the generously equipped Classic 1.2, you can easily see why this little car is such a big hit.

Our pick: Buy the new 1.0-litre Blue model, and won’t pay a penny in road tax. Its three-cylinder petrol engine puts out less than 100g/km of CO2, while 67.3mpg economy adds to the green appeal. Better still, it’s as sweet to drive and well equipped as other i10s – so put it in pole position to get the most for your money.

Highly commended

Fiat Panda

If any car shows age is no barrier to success, it’s the cheeky Fiat Panda. Despite celebrating its seventh birthday this year, it still feels as though it’s in the first flush of youth. Fun, affordable and practical, the charming Italian – a former Auto Express Car of the Year – remains a firm favourite.

Kia Picanto

The latest addition to the city car sector is also one of the best. With eye-catching looks and a classy cabin, the second-generation Kia Picanto proves small really is beautiful. It may not be as cheap as the Hyundai i10, but it’s well equipped and comes with an industry-leading seven-year warranty.
