Toyota Avensis

Toyota reckons its new Avensis has the ability take on both mainstream and executive rivals in the family car sector.

  • Rating:
  • On the road price: £17,550 - £27,600
  • For : Comfortable, strong engines, roomy cabin and well equipped.
  • Against : Uninspiring styling, dull driving experience and unimaginative interior design.

Styling/Image

While you’d struggle to describe the Avensis as good looking, its large size means that it does have presence. Available as saloon or an estate (which is even larger) the big Toyota is packed full of standard kit no matter which trim level you opt for – T2, TR, T4 and T-Spirit. However, the car’s bulky shape is colour sensitive – choose a light metallic and the family car can look quite classy. However, it’ll still lack the visual impact of the Vauxhall Insignia or premium image of an Audi A4.

Interior/Practicality

In estate form the Toyota is simply vast, and the one-touch folding rear bench is simple to use. All models benefit from a spacious cabin, while comfortable front seats mean a good driving position. All models get a CD player, air conditioning and seven airbags while the mid spec TR model adds cruise control, leather steering wheel and dual zone climate control. However the centre console on range-topping models is loaded with controls making it fussy and a little complicated.

Engine/Performance

Three diesel and two petrol engines are available. The entry-level 2.0-litre oil-burner makes do with 125bhp while the top 2.2-litre version has 148bhp. Like most diesels it’s the torque that dominates, and both units have it in spades. For those that must have petrol power there are two smooth revving options – a 1.8-litre with 145bhp and the 2.0-litre that adds only another 5bhp to that total. Performance from the bigger diesel engine is particularly impressive, thanks to a linear power delivery and decent fuel returns.

Driving experience

The Avensis is never going to set driving enthusiasts hearts on fire, but it’s still a very capable car. With multiple adjustments for the seat and wheel it is easy to get comfortable, but over-light steering and a soft suspension set-up mean it never inspires confidence through the bends. However, the ride quality is pretty good and the Toyota is a very easy car to drive. Performance fans should look to the torquey diesel engines, which deliver surprisingly strong real world pace.

Ownership Costs

A good range of standard kit across the range and a three-year/60,000 mile warranty means the Avensis makes a strong impression in the showroom. And with all models returning over 40mpg and CO2emissions ranging from 163g/km to 135g/km your annual road tax will be £150 or less - although selecting the automatic gearbox results in an increase in dirty exhaust gases

Safety/Environment

Seven airbags combine with VSC+, ABS and EBD to make the Avensis one of the safest cars in the class – gaining a five star rating in recent EuroNCAP testing. The petrol models emit 154g/km and 163g/km respectively while the diesel range starts at only 135g/k. factor in fuel returns of 43.5mpg for the 1.8 petrol and 55.4mpg for the 2.2 diesel and the Avensis makes a reasonably eco-friendly family runaround.
