Finally, McLaren has revealed the last secret of its all-new supercar: the price. The mid-engined MP4-12C will weigh in at £168,500 when sales start next year – undercutting its closest rival, the Ferrari 458 Italia.

The Ferrari starts at £169,545, including VAT at the current 17.5 per cent, while the McLaren’s price includes VAT at January’s new 20 per cent rate, but doesn’t include the first registration fee and road fund licence which will take the total to £169,550.

The price of the 458 Italia hasn’t been set for next year, but is almost certain to increase to take account of the VAT change. However, the 458 does include carbon ceramic brakes as standard, while they're an optional extra on the McLaren.

Available in the firm’s three new showrooms in London, Manchester and Birmingham, the McLaren boasts a single-piece carbon fibre chassis. It’s powered by a 592bhp 3.8-litre V8, which promises a 0-124mph time of less than 10 seconds.

The MP4-12C is also significantly cheaper than the last McLaren supercar, the F1, which sold for £635,000 in 1994.

Very well priced, compared to the 458. This is going to be the biggest supercar showdown of all time!

in my opinion it looks a little bland compared to the 458, but its still stunning and it will attract its fair share of admirers. cant wait to see them compared with the gallardo and sls amg. now that'l be a group test.
