New Alpina XD3: prices revealed for pumped-up SUV

New Alpina XD3 features a 330bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo diesel, with prices starting from £57,900

Full pricing and specs for the new Alpina XD3 have been announced. The pumped-up version of the BMW X3 is available to order now, priced from £57,900. The first cars will reach customers in the first quarter of 2019.

The German brand has given the XD3 a typical Alpina makeover with a deeper front bumper, 22-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels (smaller 20-inch wheels are also available) and a more aggressive rear bumper sprouting a quad-exhaust setup.

Changes are less dramatic inside where the addition of an Alpina steering wheel with blue and green stitching is the most obvious change over a standard BMW X3, and the X3’s digital dials gain new graphics unique to the XD3.

The changes are rounded off with Alpina door sills, and a numbered plaque, while piano black interior trim and piano black trim pieces are optional. Of course, as with any Alpina, customers can choose to customise the paint and interior finishes to their own specific tastes.

Alpina’s focus has been on the powertrain; right-hand drive versions of XD3 are powered by a 330bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine, which develops 700Nm of torque. That makes it possible, Alpina says, of covering 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds – 1.4 seconds quicker than a Porsche Macan Diesel S.

Despite the performance the XD3 is said to return claimed economy of 31.8mpg with CO2 emissions of 238g/km. However, left-hand drive versions of the XD3 feature a more powerful 3.0-litre quad-turbo diesel, which develops 384bhp and 770Nm of torque.

Both left- and right-hand drive models come as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a tuned version of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. Alpina has also kitted the XD3 out with sport suspension and electronically adjustable dampers, while a limited-slip differential has been bolted onto the rear axle to further improve performance.

Being based on the X3 means the Alpina benefits from the same roomy cabin, and a 550-litre boot which grows in size to 1,600 litres when the rear bench is folded.

The price places it at just under £10,000 more than the BMW X3 XDrive30d M Sport. That’s before you’ve specced the X3 with any options at all, so the power upgrade, styling tweaks and exclusivity the XD3 offers makes the extra outlay seem quite reasonable.
