BMW 4 Series facelift arrives with a new look and more kit for 2017

Facelifted BMW 4 Series gains design tweaks more technology and M Performance upgrades

BMW has revealed its new 4 Series range for 2017, ushering in a minor facelift with new interior styling options, tweaks to some of the cabin tech, plus M Performance styling packs.

Styling tweaks are kept to a minimum, but the new models usher in new headlamp technology with hexagonal full-LED headlamps inspired by the units found on the new 5 Series. Bi-LED headlamps come as standard, while the adaptive LED lights are optional. They form part of a slightly refreshed nose, with a new front apron on Sport and Luxury Line models. LED foglamps are now standard kit.

Full LED taillights also feature as part of the package, with a new horizontal lighting signature alongside a new rear apron.

Four new 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheel designs are now available, as well as two new paint hues – Snapper Rocks Blue, a new shade of turquoise, plus Sunset Orange.

Minor new touches are found in the cabin too. The surrounds for the air outlets, control panels in the doors, and the switch for the hardtop roof in the 4 Series Cabriolet now all have a new electroplated finish, while new chrome trim surrounds the air conditioning and audio controls. The centre console gets a high-gloss black cover panel, while the sports steering wheel features a new rim.

Alongside the new paint colours and alloy wheels, three new leather upholstery options have arrived – Midnight Blue leather alongside Cognac and Ivory White tones.

The infotainment setup has been tweaked too. The optional Navigation Professional system has a new user interface, while BMW’s Multifunctional Instrument Display makes the options list.

Under the skin the same engine line-up appears, though the 4 Series Gran Coupe gets an extra diesel - the new 418d uses a 148bhp powerunit capable of delivering a claimed 68.9mpg. Elsewhere BMW has altered the suspension making both the standard setup and M Sport kit stiffer, while introducing revisions to the steering too.

New for the 4 Series range is a selection of M Performance accessories. Four individual packages are available, such as the £3,000 Exterior Carbon package introducing full carbon exterior styling components. Smaller packs are available, as is an interior carbon styling package.

Prices for the updated 4 Series range kick off at £32,525 for the 420i in either Coupe or Gran Coupe form. The convertible, with the same 181bhp engine, starts from £37,315. The entry level 420i car is available with X-Drive all-wheel-drive, priced at £34,065 on the Coupe and Grand Coupe.

Diesels start at £33,395 for the 420d Gran Coupe, while the new M4 swoops in from £57,817.
