Hydrogen-powered Lexus LF-FC concept shown in Tokyo
Lexus unveils a new LF-FC luxury concept previewing the next LS, with a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain and striking styling
Lexus stormed the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show with its latest concept - the LF-FC. The stunning luxury saloon ushers in visions of the company's future, with styling that showcases the next-generation LS and a futuristic hydrogen fuel cell powertrain.
The striking four-door design uses an exagerrated version of Lexus' bold spindle grille at the front, adopting styling cues from the LF-LC coupe concept. The angular front-end contrasts with a curvy side profile, while the rear gets large three-pronged tail-lights.
It's radically different to the current, three-year old Lexus LS, but the concept is said to showcase the 'design and technology direction of the brand's future flagship sedan'. That may not arrive in production for two to three-years, however.
Even more future-thinking is found under the skin. The concept uses a hydrogen fuel-cell electric powertrain which operates as a four-wheel drive system. The main drive goes through the rear wheels most of the time, but two electric motors at the front axle allow even distribution of torque when required. It's a different setup to the fuel-cell Mirai, so expect significantly increased peformance.
New tech includes the latest generation of autonomous driving systems, plus a gesture-control infotainment system that uses holographic projections. Watch out, Mercedes S-Class!
