Only a few years ago, the idea of a large 4x4 wearing BMW’s famous M badge would have seemed absurd. But the new X6M – launched with the X5M – has monsters such as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo firmly in its sights.
Powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8, this 547bhp beast is as controversial as it is bold. Huge 20-inch wheels and gaping air ducts mean it looks the part, but what takes your breath away is the incredible performance. Straight-line pace is superb, while the level of poise and grip in corners belies the car’s 2,380kg kerbweight.
Dynamically, the blend of minimal body movement, sharp steering, superb traction and strong brakes makes it hard to fault. The all-new 4.4-litre unit is free revving and has a pleasing turbo whistle, matched to
a subdued V8 bellow.
The X6 is able to combine supercar performance and handling with a clever all-wheel-drive system – and, at the same time, merge coupé and SUV bodystyles. A strict four-seater, it isn’t logical, but it’s a very capable and utterly unique machine.Â
With its vast dimensions, huge price tag and heavy fuel consumption, the X6M will be a small seller in the UK.
Whether the world needs this kind of car or not, it’s an incredible piece of engineering. Its pace, handling and agility defy physics – and it behaves like a performance saloon, rather than a 2,380kg SUV.
