The Volkswagen Beetle arrived last year and quickly impressed with its obvious improvements over the old model – bettering it in nearly every area.
However, it fell just short of the charming MINI Cooper S in our first group test. The MINI was not only better to drive but cheaper to buy and relatively inexpensive to run. So will the new Beetle Cabriolet conquer where its hatchback brother failed?
First off, the VW is much bigger than the MINI, so scores on practicality. Refinement is good and engine choices wide. There is the option of two diesel and three petrol motors, the most powerful of which packs 197bhp and hits 62mph in just 7.5 seconds.
