This is our best look yet at Audi’s pumped-up city car, the S1. Spied while undergoing testing in Germany, a debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show is expected.
In recent years there has been several warmed-up versions of the Audi A1, including the wild 496bhp Clubsport Quattro concept and the limited edition 252bhp A1 Quattro, both of which hinted at the possibility of a mass-produced S1 variant.
Spied wearing updated A1 clothes, the S1 also has several design cues from the A3 range. Looking beyond the camouflage at the headlights and taillights, you can they are a similar shape to those on the A3.
Revised front and rear bumpers along with an updated grille will make up the bulk of cosmetic changes. The attempted disguise, however, doesn’t hide the big alloy wheels and quad exhaust pipes, clearly indicating this as the S1 variant, the performance model for the masses.
Power is expected to come from a detuned version of the 2.0-litre engine found in the A1 Quattro. Over 200bhp is likely and the Quattro all-wheel drive system will help the S1 sprint from 0-62mph in under six seconds.
The launch of the S1 will also coincide with the facelifted A1 range due early next year. Prices are yet to be confirmed but expect a price tag of around £25,000.
