Based on the standard model, the drop-top will replace the current DB7 cabrio and cost about 150.000 Euros. The engine will be the same as in the forthcoming DB9 - a 430-HP version of Aston's V12, as used in the Vanquish. Unlike that model, however, it will be offered with a six-speed manual or straight-forward sequential gearbox. Our sources claim a 500-HP variant could be on the cards, but it won't use the Vantage tag, as that is reserved for the new Porsche 911-rivalling AM V8.

The car, due for launch in 2005, will be a proper four-seater based on Aston's new all-aluminium VH chassis, which will also underpin the AM V8 and the eventual replacement for the Vanquish. This platform is said to be adaptable to incorporate at least three different lengths and wheelbases, and places the engine as far back as possible for optimum weight distribution.

Aston Martin is offering finance for the first time. The Personal Contract Plan on a 150.000-Euro DB7 Vantage involves a 38.000-Euro deposit, 35 monthly instalments of around 1500 Euros and a final, eye-watering 80.000-Euro payment. General sales manager lan Minards said he expects "plenty of people" to take up the offer. He denied it was a way of clearing DB7 stock before the DB9 arrives.
