The stunning Mazda Takeri concept car will appear in production form at the Paris Motor Show in 2012, badged as the Mazda 6.
Sources say that car will reach UK dealers early in 2013, while prices are expected to start at around £19,000 - a slight increase on the current pricetag.
The new model will look almost identical to the boldly styled Takeri – save for a slight tweak to the car’s plunging roofline - which is required to improve rear-seat headroom and boot space.
Estate and saloon versions are also under development, and new details have been revealed about the car’s engine line-up too, which will include a 164bhp 2.0-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel unit, developing 173bhp.
Speaking at the car’s unveiling, Mazda boss Takashi Yamanouchi said that
drivers could expect an ultra fuel-efficient 2.2-litre diesel version to offer a range
of almost 1,000 miles when paired with the firm’s new six-speed
automatic gearbox.
And that could just be the start. Auto Express has also learned that Mazda is on the verge of beginning tests of a new SkyActiv-inspired range extended EV system.
The innovative set-up would work by using a diesel combustion engine to power the front wheels and an electric motor to power those at the rear. It is likely to debut on the new CX-5 crossover in 2014.
However, as the CX-5’s chassis architecture is so similar to that which underpins the new 6, the system could also be made to work on the family car too.
Set to offer fuel economy to rival cars like the Vauxhall Ampera, the car will also have an EV-only mode with a range of around 30 miles.

How dull by comparison to Honda is this model. Dull, dull and duller! Look how exciting the Honda range looks compared to the Mazdas. Dear Honda, please do us all a favour and create a version of the MX5, your designers will do it justice, the present one has lost its way.
Mazda is well ahead in design compared to Honda.
CX-7, RX-8, MX-5, new 3 and 6 series to mention the latest few..
And then you have on the other side CRV (ugly and uglier), Civic (an egg on wheels) and the Accord (thats where the word 'dull' fits)!! Only the s-2000 (not being produced anymore) deserves to be where the Mazdas are.
Mazda has been the only Japanese consistantly revolutionary brand in design. Just remember all the rx line, Xedos, 323f etc. What do I have to remember from the Honda in that respect?
Nothing except the NSX of 30 years ago and which is not to be considered a mass production car.
This new 6 is a clear winner, only if they could improve that front mesh.
This looks absolutely amazing. I did not believe this concept would make it to production!! Great job Mazda!
CarlyWarly - you must mean the opposite? Or be joking? Or have lost it completely...
....because you are obviously having trouble seeing whats going on in the car world. I ve owned Honda's, my parents have owned Hondas for over twenty years to the present and I respect Honda as a company but frankly they are off the pace now when it comes to satisfying the car enthusiast. Thats why they appeal to old people (Jazz&Accord) mothers on the school run (Civic & CRV) and eco mentalists (hybrid models). Mazda have been producing cool looking (and driving) mainstream cars (2,3&6) since the inception of the first 6 and the above concept shows they are really going places and thats not to mention the MX5 and RX8 - Honda havent produced a cool car since the S2K. Honda are struggling in Europe - Suzuki sell more cars than them in Europe - Fact! Honda would do well to have a good look at what Mazda are doing.........
It is a matter of opinion of which we are allowed to express, that is the point of making comment. Feel free to praise the mundane and in loosing the point detract by personal attack. These cars are designed for people like you so enjoy them!
CarlyWarly is correct in that we are all entitled to an opinion but I'm in total agreement with other bloggers in that Honda has nothing to remotely compare to the Mazdas in design and styling. The Accord is decent but the present 6 hatch with spoiler is superb in comparison. The S2000 was a nice car but the motoring journalists appear to have given higher ratings to the much less expensive MX5.
Perhaps Carly should indeed visit that spec shop!
